A Grandfather’s Love

In my life, there has always been a special person who has lived his life focused completely on Christ, giving all his praise to Him. This person was my grandfather. He was a supportive father, grandfather and husband to his family, instilling his strength through his love.

After many years of healthy living, this faithful man of God faced his toughest trial– a grave, seven month battle with cancer. My grandfather is now embraced in the arms of Jesus. I cannot explain with words how much he has influenced my life and what an amazing person he was. Sometimes I think back to the times when I was a kid, how my mother played the piano and my grandfather sang hymns. His favorite hymn was “Father, I Stretch My Hands to Thee.” The music would come to life because his voice came straight from his heart. Even though I am profoundly deaf, I will cherish that memory for the rest of my life.

When I was growing up, I never felt comfortable listening to the Word of God. At the time, I did not understand why my grandfather had my brothers and I read Scripture. Now that I am older, I have come to appreciate his willingness to share the Gospel and pray with us.

My grandfather sacrificed so much for me and my family. I wouldn’t be the person I am now without his love, kindness, and wisdom. I’m grateful that God gave us time together and blessed me with the most wonderful grandfather. Not long ago, my grandfather took a break from cleaning my room and began to sing, pouring out all his love and passion. I feel that the words he sang were his legacy, a reflection of how he truly lived every day: “This is my story, this is my song, praising my Savior all the day long. . . ”
